On February 11, 2008, Sgt Seth Williams was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Austin, Texas - less than three months after an honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps and three combat tours in Iraq. He was thirty-one years old. The driver was never found.
Through the Grief is Dayton Ann Williams' account of what came after: not a ten-step model for healing, but the true and unguarded story of a mother learning to survive the unthinkable while still showing up for her surviving children, her career, and her own unraveling sense of self. Written from inside the storm and revised across nearly two decades of living beyond it, this second edition carries the reader through early grief's rawest terrain and into what waits on the other side - not closure, but transformation.
This expanded edition follows Williams' journey as it continued to unfold: the founding of the Sgt Tyrell Seth Williams USMC Endowed Scholarship at The University of Texas at Austin, a second and third book, and - eight years after Tyrell's death, following a traumatic brain injury of her own - a master's degree in social work earned at sixty-nine, part of her own path to healing her brain in a different way. Her thesis examines posttraumatic growth in combat veterans, research born directly from her own hardest question: how do we grow from what breaks us? Today Williams works as a certified peer support specialist and speaker, walking alongside veterans and the bereaved with the same honesty this book offers its reader.
Grief experts have long recommended this memoir for its refusal to sanitize loss. It does not offer easy comfort. It offers company - the company of someone who has walked the entire road, from the phone call that broke her life in two, to a scholarship that carries her son's name forward, to a peace she never expected to find.
