Halloween is finally here, and Maddie can't wait to go trick-or-treating with her friends Eli and Max. Her candy bucket is ready, and she loves her new white-and-pink astronaut costume. It looks just right hanging on her bedroom door. Wearing it, though, is another story. The collar scratches her neck, and a seam rubs against her arm. Before they leave, Mom helps Maddie find a soft shirt to wear underneath. Maddie decides she can carry her helmet and put it on only when she wants to.
Outside, the neighborhood glows with pumpkins and Halloween lights. Maddie enjoys the crunch of leaves under her shoes-until a decoration shrieks. A skeleton springs up, lights flash, and music booms from a nearby house. Maddie covers her ears and stops. Eli waits with her, and Max suggests they skip that house. The quieter sidewalk feels much better.
At the next doorstep, Maddie knows the words trick-or-treat. She has said them before. But when the door opens, the words get stuck. Her friends say them, and Maddie offers a little wave. The neighbor smiles and drops candy into her bucket.
As the night goes on, Maddie finds her own rhythm. Sometimes she speaks, sometimes she waves, and sometimes her friends help. The three of them admire funny pumpkins, skip decorations that are too loud, and keep laughing together. By the time they head home, Maddie's bucket is heavy and Halloween still feels like hers.
Through Maddie's Eyes: Halloween My Way is a warm, playful picture book about sensory sensitivities, friendship, and having choices. From an itchy costume to startling decorations and the pressure to speak to strangers, Maddie's Halloween reflects moments many children experience. Her friends make room for what she needs without making her feel left out. This reassuring story reminds young readers that they can participate in traditions in ways that feel comfortable to them-and that a wonderful Halloween does not have to look the same for everyone.
