Ask Theo to line up a sum, and the numbers wander off. Ask him to build a world - and just watch.
A Built for Big Things book.
Theo's mind is always building something - cities in the clouds, castles, maps of places that have never existed. But numbers wander off on him: sixes turn into nines, clocks never tell him the same story twice, and the Friday Maths Minute leaves his page empty while everyone else's pencils scratch away.
Then Theo's dad tells him what he thinks his brain really is: not a calculator - a map-maker. A world-builder. There's a name for the wandering - dyscalculia - and it affects about one child in every twenty. With a numberline, a chunky calculator he never has to hide, and a clock he can actually see, Theo stops pretending he's just slow. And on Explorers' Day, his made-up world covers a whole table - and the whole class leans in.
A warm, hopeful picture book about dyscalculia, for children who think in pictures - and for everyone who loves them. Theo and his Wandering Numbers reassures young readers that a mind that struggles with sums may be busy doing a different, brilliant job.
Inside you'll find:
- A warm, affirming story about dyscalculia, imagination, and world-building
- Beautiful, full-page illustrations on every spread
- A Map Your Own World activity - not a single sum in sight
- A short note for grown-ups with caring, practical guidance
Perfect for ages 5-9, for classrooms and bedtime, and a thoughtful gift for any child whose numbers won't stay still.
There's no wrong way to map a world that's yours.
