Two contemporary Miami stories about what young people inherit, and what they do with what they find.
In MAYA AND BEN, two seniors at Julia Tuttle Charter are assigned to co-write a modern Romeo and Juliet. Rose Sumner has just withdrawn from her private school in Coral Gables after her father's federal indictment. Javier Delacroix is the quiet boy in the back row whose father works nights at a hotel on Collins Avenue. They don't know how to write thirteen-year-olds in love, so they text each other as the characters for a week, and what comes back is more than a script.
In JOSEPH BROTHERS, a seventeen-year-old at Julia Tuttle Charter finds an unplayed voicemail his father left him eighteen months ago, the night before he died. The message is about his uncle, the man who is now running the family auto shop in Little Haiti and sleeping in his mother's room. Andre asks his uncle for a part-time job, learns the work, and begins to understand what his father was trying to tell him.
Both stories are quiet retellings of Shakespeare set in present-day Miami: a Romeo and Juliet inverted by phones, and a Hamlet in which the ghost is a voicemail. They are about fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters, the weight of a name in a city that has turned against it, and the long way home.
For readers of Edwidge Danticat, Bryan Washington, and Jacqueline Woodson.
