A Tale of Aceh is the story of Hasan Bangkaru, a child soldier caught up in the civil war of Aceh province, Sumatra, Indonesia. Wounded in an ambush by the military deep in the jungle, Hasan takes refuge in a tree-top. There he has an unlikely encounter with a great ape, as he recovers and tries to think a way out of his predicament. Eventually, he embarks on an epic voyage across the island of Sumatra, trying to reach the west coast and the sea. Then, alone on an island, fate deals him, and so many others along with him, the harshest of cards.
