Thomas Pigglewick and his father Michael absolutely loved their vintage model railway set. With construction starting years before Thomas was even born, the train set has always proved to be a rather proud achievement for the Pigglewick family, and an object of bonding for the father and son ever since. After waking from a terrible nightmare, Thomas experiences a series of increasingly unexplainable events that all lead to the same conclusion: there's something wrong with the train set. Before he gets a chance to explain this to his parents however, the whole family is whisked away on a daring adventure, transported into the model railway itself with only the family pets left to fend off these otherworldly forces.
