I protagonisti sono due giovani: Domenico Maresca e Gelsomina. Domenico, o Mimì, è un pittore di santi con una piccola bottega ben avviata e con una buona posizione sociale tale da permettergli di prendere in moglie una giovane bella e di buona famiglia: Anna. Gelsomina è una ragazza piuttosto bruttina fisicamente, che spera di trovare l'uomo che volendole bene le consenta di divenire una donna stimata e una moglie onesta. Ma sbaglia, si lega a uomini più grandi di lei, crede in promesse di matrimonio che non si concretizzano, accetta la benevolenza di corteggiatori frivoli. Anche Domenico sembra avere poca fortuna: Anna non lo ama e forse lo tradisce.
