Reading the tracks leads the spies to the wild's own spy team: Fred the armadillo, a gentle digger in a suit of armor; Sebastian the red-tailed hawk, chief scout of the hills with eyes eight times sharper than ours; and Thor the coyote, whose fearsome howl turns out to be something wonderful - a song, the way coyote families say I'm here, I'm safe, goodnight across the miles.
Then there's spotlighting from the bed of Pawpaw's pickup - flashlights sweeping the brush for deer, cottontails, raccoons, and possums, every pair of eyes glowing like tiny lanterns (and the real science of eyeshine that makes it happen!). Plus marshmallows around the campfire, and a rescue: when Rowdy follows one detail too many and gets lost in the dark, it takes the whole wild team - hawk eyes, coyote song, and armadillo arrows - to bring their spy home.
