Souls Belated is a novella written by Edith Wharton, first published in 1899. The story revolves around Lydia and Gannett, two middle-aged lovers who reunite after being separated for several years. Lydia is a successful artist who has been living in Europe, while Gannett is a journalist who has been living in New York. When the two meet again, they decide to take a trip together to visit Lydia's sister in the countryside. However, their idyllic reunion is short-lived as they both struggle with their own personal demons and the societal expectations that come with their relationship. Lydia is a strong-willed woman who has always defied convention, but she is haunted by the guilt of abandoning her husband and child for her art. Gannett, on the other hand, is torn between his love for Lydia and his fear of scandal. As they navigate their relationship in the face of societal disapproval, they must confront their own doubts and insecurities. Souls Belated is a poignant exploration of love, passion, and the constraints of society. Wharton's prose is elegant and insightful, capturing the complex emotions of her characters with nuance and sensitivity. The novella is a timeless masterpiece that continues to resonate with readers today. She stayed there for a long time, in the hypnotized contemplation, not of Mrs. Cope's present, but of her own past. Gannett, early that morning, had gone off on a long walk--he had fallen into the habit of taking these mountain tramps with various fellow lodgers; but even had he been within reach she could not have gone to him just then. She had to deal with herself first. She was surprised to find how, in the last months, she had lost the habit of introspection. Since their coming to the Hotel Bellosguardo she and Gannett had tacitly avoided themselves and each other. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
