Slip or Jump is an engrossing coming of age story in the tradition of The Catcher in the Rye, written by philosopher/poet Dustin Brewer. The engaging, often non-linear story takes on the grandest of themes as Brewer's protagonist transitions from a reserved boy to a confident young man during the maelstrom of college life. It's a quick read, made more so by Brewer's clever word play, keen observations and active mind. Melancholy, however, weighs heavy throughout, as Steele/Brewer laments man's destruction of the natural world that so colors his worldview. I look forward to futures tales and insights from Brewer after this promising first novel. - L Wolf

During the summer before his final year at Columbia University, Sam Steele was lucky enough to have gotten stoned, which nearly caused him to jump to his death off of a desert cliff. He did not jump. But he did shatter. Psychologically broken, Sam does his best to put himself back together. In the process, he breaks up with his girlfriend, replaces toxic 'friends' with better ones, and performs at a concert, gaining rockstar status on campus. These changes, though, aren't enough. So, he embarks on a solitary adventure through the South, where he hitch-hikes, wanders, and tries to find his way.
