In the year 4201 humanity's last foothold in the galaxy was on the moon Elisari of the planet Garran. One hundred years prior, one of the five Elisari settlements mysteriously went dark. On the other side of the moon, the remaining four settlements, desperate to reclaim lost technology and rebuild humanity, periodically send out groups of volunteers on an expedition across Elisari to reach the lost settlement.
