Poet and U.S. Navy veteran Tshombe Sekou has spent a lifetime crossing borders - from the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans to Israel, from sixteen years in Japan to the decks of warships - returning to an America still arguing about whether the people who built it were ever meant to be free inside it. He has carried one question through all of it: the question Amiri Baraka once asked of a room, and never stopped asking.

For those encountering his work for the first time, it is an entry into two decades of Black persistence, existence, and sovereign expression, brought forward with renewed urgency.
At the heart of this collection is the Nishima - an original poetic form built from two inheritances: the Hebrew neshama (breath and soul, one word) and the Japanese ma (the sacred pause). Its syllabic structure - four syllables, one, three - carries the address of the house in Israel where those inheritances first entered him: 413. Six acts of poetry. Five essays. One form that holds all of it.
America planted a seed of perception. The world has sat in its shade. The entire world - including Black people - has fed on its bitter fruit.
But that tree cannot survive the truth.
SEED is what grew anyway.
