Teachers are encouraged to provide each student with an experiment notebook during science lessons. By collecting expository writing and working notes, this notebook could help develop students' scientific thinking and rigor. However, since spontaneous writing is a challenging activity for fourth-grade students, working notes are rare or even nonexistent unless required by the teacher. Students draw conclusions without taking a step back to review any notes they may have made; consequently, they do not recognize the value of writing as a tool for constructing knowledge. This lack of scientific rigor is also evident in their labeled diagrams, where most scientific standards are not followed. Nevertheless, the experiment notebook helps foster students' scientific mindset through expository writing that reflects all the steps required to question, construct, and acquire knowledge. To be effective, an experiment notebook must accompany the student throughout their entire schooling; it must therefore be designed and developed by the entire teaching staff.
