In Systematic Theology, Volume 22: The Doctrine of Heaven, Hell, and the Eternal State, Jeff C. Edwards examines the two final destinies revealed in the Bible: the everlasting punishment of the lost and the everlasting glory of the redeemed.
The first half of this volume confronts the biblical doctrine of Hell with seriousness and precision. It distinguishes Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, Tartarus, the Abyss, and the Lake of Fire, then follows Scripture's testimony concerning the Second Death, outer darkness, everlasting punishment, the worm that dieth not, no rest day nor night, and the eternal removal of every blessing flowing from the goodness of God.
This study rejects softened and distorted views of final judgment. Hell is not a party. Satan does not reign there. The lost do not cease to exist, and all people are not eventually saved. Annihilationism, universalism, and every hope of another opportunity after final judgment are tested against the whole counsel of Scripture.
The second half turns to the everlasting hope of those who belong to Christ. It explores the New Heaven, the New Earth, the New Jerusalem, resurrection life, perfect holiness, perfected fellowship, meaningful service, eternal reign, and the promise that the servants of God will see His face.
Heaven is not vague, ghostly, passive, or boring. The God who created beauty, music, friendship, discovery, work, celebration, living creatures, mountains, oceans, and stars will not prepare an eternal state that is less joyful than the world corrupted by sin. The New Creation removes the curse without removing the goodness God originally placed within creation.
Above every gift stands the highest hope of eternity:
God Himself will dwell with His people forever.
Written according to the governing conviction that Scripture defines Scripture, this book allows the biblical text to define every term, image, warning, and promise. It is both a solemn warning and a breathtaking presentation of Christian hope.
