Left and right don't explain politics. Time does.
Why does the same policy get opposite labels? Why do incompatible ideologies-Soviet communism and Nazi fascism-produce nearly identical structures? The answer lies in temporal assumptions: whether history moves toward a knowable endpoint (the Blueprint worldview) or evolves without terminus (the Principle worldview). These commitments generate complete political logics spanning epistemology, ethics, and institutions.
Chapter 1 shows traditional classification creates confusion by tracking policies rather than purposes. In China, the same market reform was rightist in the 1980s and leftist by the 2000s. In the West, free speech migrated from left to right; post-9/11 security and COVID lockdowns are identical expansions with opposite labels. A valid criterion must reach beneath policies to the assumptions generating them.
Chapter 2 establishes time as that criterion. Temporal assumptions are more generative than human nature, scarcity, or power-they structure responses to all, as grammar structures vocabulary. Does history have an endpoint? is ontological, not empirical-and generates opposing logics across every political domain.
Chapter 3 derives the Blueprint logic from endpoint-belief. If a terminus exists, it must be knowable → vanguard epistemology suppressing distributed knowledge, creating crisis-and-escalation cycles. The endpoint is infinite good; costs are finite; ∞/F = ∞-any cost is justified. This drives escalation from coercion to purity spirals. Body counts follow: Soviet Purges 600K-1.2M; Nazi Holocaust 6M; Khmer Rouge 1.7M (21-24% of Cambodia). Politically: centralization, comprehensive planning, destruction of intermediaries (totalitarianism differs from authoritarianism-it cannot tolerate private spheres), synchronization (Year Zero), cultural transformation. Five extreme cases across different continents, eras, and endpoint contents converge on identical structure. Nordic challenge: robust intermediaries constrained radical logic-same logic, different constraints, opposite outcomes.
Chapter 4 derives Principle logic from rejection of endpoints. Society is not an entity that evolves but evolution itself; complexity exceeds comprehension. Hayek's knowledge problem: central planning requires knowledge that doesn't exist in aggregable form; market prices are discovery mechanisms. Chesterton's Fence: don't remove what you don't understand. No infinite good justifies means → deontological constraints are necessary (Kant, Aristotle, Berlin). Five features mirror Blueprint in reverse: distributed power, market coordination, protected intermediaries, asynchronous evolution, incrementalism. Organic evolution requires variation, selection, time, feedback, distributed authority. Cases: Britain, America, Switzerland. Boundary: Principle logic didn't prevent imperial domination.
Chapter 5 introduces meta-conservatism-an analytical framework revealing what diverse conservatisms share despite contradictory surfaces. Not what is conserved but how: rejection of endpoints, epistemic humility, protected intermediaries, deontological constraints, asynchronous evolution. Three false conservatisms neoconservatism (democracy as endpoint → regime change-Blueprint with conservative label); reactionary movements (backward endpoint-Blueprint reversed); nationalist authoritarianism (test: intermediaries-conservatives protect, authoritarians destroy). Defending monarchy versus a republic is content; protecting evolution versus forcing transformation is logic.
Analytical, not normative. Classifies and explains-does not prescribe.
