This system is hormone-free. Commercial farms use juvenile hormone analogs to force larvae to grotesque sizes. These chemicals activate receptors in vertebrate bodies that govern neural development. The long-term effects of chronic low-dose exposure have never been adequately studied. There is no reason to take that risk when you can produce your own mealworms with less effort than a houseplant.
