An early comic novel in which Wodehouse employs satire and absurdity to reimagine the defence of England against an improbable invasion.
First published in 1909, The Swoop; or, How Clarence Saved England presents a deliberately exaggerated scenario in which multiple foreign powers simultaneously invade England, only to be thwarted by unlikely circumstances and an equally unlikely hero. Wodehouse uses the premise to parody contemporary anxieties about invasion and national preparedness, transforming public concerns into material for comic treatment.
The narrative reflects an early phase of Wodehouse's career, preceding the development of his later, more refined comic style associated with Jeeves and Wooster. Even so, the work displays his characteristic control of tone, timing, and understatement, combining farcical situations with a measured narrative voice. The Swoop remains of interest both as a satire of its period and as an example of Wodehouse's evolving approach to humour.
