Romanen är en berättelse om slaveri, kolonialism och relationer. I originalöversättning av Mathilda Drangel Jack London (1876-1916) var en mycket produktiv amerikansk författare som under sin livstid skrev 49 romaner och flertalet noveller. London använde sig oftast av två teman i sitt skrivande: samhällskritiken och vildmarken. Bland hans mest kända verk finns Skriet från vildmarken, Varghunden och Varg-Larsen.
