The sun, a pale, watery disc through the persistent haze, was beginning its descent, casting long, distorted shadows across the clearing. Elara watched it, not with the wistful melancholy of someone remembering a lost world, but with the keen observation of a scientist studying a predictable, albeit altered, phenomenon. Around her, the familiar sounds of the nascent community hummed: the rhythmic thud of Lena's pestle against mortar, the murmur of voices as Jax directed a few of the younger members on reinforcing a section of the palisade, the distant bleating of the goats they'd managed to acquire. It was a symphony of survival, a constant, low-level hum of effort against the encroaching silence.
Yet, beneath the surface of this diligent activity, Elara's mind, ever the tireless engine, churned. She saw the effort, yes, but she also saw the inefficiency. The water collection system, a series of repurposed barrels and salvaged plastic sheeting, was functional, but crude. Rainwater was precious, yet much of it was lost to evaporation, or seeped away before it could be channeled effectively. The small plots of cultivated land, painstakingly tilled with scavenged tools, yielded meager harvests, barely enough to sustain them through the lean periods.
