Twenty thousand years ago, the world's coastlines were substantially different from what the modern map shows.
Between modern Britain and continental Europe, a substantial inhabited landscape called Doggerland connected the two regions in a continuous territory roughly the size of England and Scotland combined. Off the western coast of India, the Gulf of Khambhat extended sixty kilometres beyond its modern shoreline as a habitable coastal plain. Across Southeast Asia, a vast exposed continent twice the size of India joined the modern Indonesian and Malaysian islands into a single landmass that geologists now call Sundaland. The southern Black Sea basin was a freshwater lake substantially below the modern sea level, with substantial coastal communities living around its perimeter.
Between approximately 18,000 BCE and 6,000 BCE, the great continental ice sheets melted and the frozen water returned to the world ocean. The sea level rose by approximately 120 metres. The substantial inhabited continental-shelf regions across the world were inundated. The human cultures that lived on those landscapes were displaced or lost. The seabed of the modern coastal seas now preserves - in conditions the contemporary marine archaeology has only recently begun to investigate at scale - the evidence of those vanished territories.
Popular alternative-history writers from Graham Hancock to Stephen Oppenheimer have, across several decades, treated the inundated regions as the locations of lost pre-Holocene civilizations whose evidence the mainstream archaeology had failed to recover. The Black Sea catastrophic-flood hypothesis proposed by William Ryan and Walter Pitman in 1997 connected the rising seas to the biblical Noah's Ark narrative. The 2001 announcement by an Indian government minister proposed a pre-Harappan submerged urban settlement in the Gulf of Khambhat. The Yonaguni Monument off the southwestern Japanese island of Yonaguni has become the most-cited single piece of physical evidence in popular treatments of submerged civilizations.
Across the past two decades, careful mainstream marine archaeology has substantially investigated what actually lies beneath the world's continental shelves. The University of Bradford's Submerged Landscapes Research Centre has mapped 188,000 square kilometres of submerged North Sea seabed. The 2025 Madura Strait discovery in Indonesia recovered the first underwater Homo erectus fossils ever found in the Sundaland region. The Bulgarian Black Sea coast has yielded substantial Late Eneolithic and Early Bronze Age submerged settlements at Urdoviza preserved in conditions that no terrestrial archaeology could match. And the strong-form popular framings - the Black Sea catastrophic flood, the Khambhat pre-Harappan city, the Yonaguni human-constructed pyramid, the Sundaland-as-cradle-of-civilization framework - have been substantially weakened by the careful subsequent investigation.
The Sunken Worlds is the sixth and final volume of the first arc of The Impossible Past. It engages a substantially different kind of case from the prior five books - a phenomenon rather than a single site, multiple regions across multiple continents, an actively developing mainstream investigation rather than a settled archaeological framework. The reader will find the popular framings engaged carefully, the mainstream picture brought up to date as of 2026, and the genuinely open questions preserved honestly when the available evidence does not close them.
The seas did rise. The lands were lost. What survives, in 2026, of the cultures that lived on them is more limited than the popular literature claims - and more substantive than mainstream archaeology has acknowledged. The picture is intermediate. The work continues.
