On one March night in 1997, thousands of people across Arizona - including the governor, a trained pilot - looked up and watched the same enormous, silent craft pass overhead. He mocked them on television. A decade later, he admitted he saw it too.

This is not a book that asks you to be impressed by big numbers. It is a book that refuses to be. Most mass sightings dissolve under the cold psychology of how crowds come to see one thing - and Carlson builds that explanation at full strength, conceding case after famous case, even a confirmed hoax.
What survives - the daylight cases, the photographs, the radar that agreed with the crowd - is the small, hard residue where the easy answer runs out, and the only honest verdict is that something real was there, and we don't know what it was.
The lone witness could always be doubted. A crowd is harder. Start reading.
