The volume begins with a presentation of Absolute Composition, a compositional approach based on structural correspondence. Rather than imposing form upon a subject, the method seeks forms already present within the organization of a phenomenon. Musical structures emerge from observed relationships in the natural world, and the resulting composition corresponds to the phenomenon from which it is derived. The aim is not representation but correspondence. The form is discovered, not imposed.
At the center of the book are ten poems organized according to musical forms, including ternary form, song form, binary form, rondo, arch form, theme and variations, and through-composed form. Each poem originates in an observable phenomenon-moonmilk cave formation, frost flowers, rainbow formation, post-fire succession, lake disturbance and recovery, volcanic eruption, kettle lake succession, solar eclipse, orbital mechanics, and photon propagation.
Accompanying every poem are detailed compositional notes describing the structural relationships, formal decisions, and compositional techniques used in its construction. These notes do not provide interpretations; instead, they document the processes through which the poems were composed.
