Twentieth-century philosophy told us it was going to be different. When, after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the postmodernists boldly announced the end of the era of 'grand narratives', they were only repeating, in the context of an apparently failed Marxism, what a few philosophers had told everyone at the beginning of the century. Ségolène Bricq traces the birth of what she calls 'The Story' to the scientific optimism of John Dewey and Bertrand Russell. But it soon took on a life of its own, evolving, according to the author, into at least three different versions.
Apart from its intrinsic power, what makes it interesting is how different philosophers tried to meet its demands - or subtly circumvent them. And how it transported us to where we are now.
