Statues of New York is a detailed survey of the public monuments and commemorative sculptures found throughout New York City in the early 20th century. Written by J. Sanford Saltus, this work serves as an essential guide to the artistic landscape of the metropolis, documenting the statues that celebrate military heroes, statesmen, and cultural icons. Through meticulous cataloging, Saltus provides readers with a historical perspective on the city's growth and the values it chose to immortalize in stone and bronze.
The book covers a wide range of locations, from the expansive greenery of Central Park to the bustling intersections of Manhattan. It highlights the work of prominent sculptors and provides context for the dedication of these monuments, making it a valuable resource for those interested in urban history and public art. Statues of New York is not only a record of specific artworks but also a reflection of the civic pride and aesthetic sensibilities of a bygone era. This volume captures the spirit of New York's public spaces, offering a timeless look at the figures that continue to stand watch over the city's streets.
