State Recreation is an essential historical survey of the development and status of state-managed parklands and recreational facilities across the United States during the early 20th century. Written by Beatrice Ward Nelson, this work serves as a foundational record of the movement to preserve natural landscapes for public use and enjoyment at the state level.
The book provides a detailed state-by-state analysis, documenting the legislative history, administrative structures, and specific properties acquired for conservation and public leisure. It highlights the growing importance of the outdoor recreation movement and the collaborative efforts between government bodies and private organizations to establish a robust system of regional natural reserves. Readers will find in-depth information on the early challenges of land acquisition, the philosophies of early conservationists, and the evolution of public policy regarding natural resources.
As a significant document in the history of American conservation, State Recreation offers invaluable insights for historians, environmentalists, and policy makers interested in the origins of the state park system and the enduring legacy of early environmental stewardship.
