SS Lane Victory: The Life of a World War II Victory Ship tells the remarkable true story of one of America's most heroic - and overlooked - vessels.

Launched in 1945 at the height of World War II, the SS Lane Victory served across three major conflicts: World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Built as part of the U.S. Victory Ship program, she carried vital cargo, troops, and hope across the world's most dangerous seas.

Her most extraordinary moment came during the Korean War, when Lane Victory rescued 7,009 civilians fleeing advancing enemy forces - a humanitarian operation that earned her the nickname The Mercy Ship. A baby was even born aboard during the evacuation.

Unlike most Victory ships that were scrapped, Lane Victory survived. Today, she stands preserved as a National Historic Landmark and living memorial to the U.S. Merchant Marine and Navy Armed Guard - civilians who faced wartime dangers with little recognition.

This book explores:

The Victory Ship program and emergency wartime shipbuilding

Daily life aboard a WWII merchant vessel

Combat service, refugee evacuations, and humanitarian missions

The unsung heroism of the Merchant Marine

Lane Victory's preservation as a museum ship

Written with clarity and historical respect, this book is ideal for readers interested in World War II history, maritime history, naval logistics, and American heritage.
