Level 1 got you reading Hangul and speaking in the present tense. Level 2 does the two things that turn that into a conversation: it puts the past tense in your mouth, and it teaches the one shape the rest of the language hangs on.

Every Korean course you have tried teaches these as seven separate rules with seven separate tables: the past tense, please-do-it, try-doing-it, you-must, you-may, because, and and-then. They are not seven rules. They are one operation - find the verb's stem - followed by seven different things you can put behind it.
