One shape unlocks the whole language. This book is built on it.

Level 1 got you reading kana and speaking in the present tense. Level 2 does the two things that turn that into a conversation: it puts the past tense in your mouth, and it teaches the te-form.

The past tense is nearly free. ます becomes ました. です becomes でした. That is the entire operation - no irregular verbs, no auxiliaries, nothing to look up. Four letters, and half of what you can already say moves into the past.

The te-form is where every other course loses people, because every other course teaches it as three verb groups and a conjugation table. It is not that. It is a sound change you can hear - う・つ・る become って, む・ぶ・ぬ become んで, く becomes いて - and this book gives you the whole of it on one page, then spends three lessons on the four jobs it does:

  • Asking for something to be done - 待ってください, please wait
  • Asking permission - 写真を撮ってもいいですか, may I take a photo
  • Saying what is happening - 東京に住んでいます, I live in Tokyo
  • Joining two sentences into one - 駅まで歩いて、電車に乗りました
