El Primer viaje alrededor del mundo, relatado en su libro por Antonio Pigafetta, ya habÃa sucedido a principios de aquel siglo y terminó en septiembre de 1522.
Sin embargo, MartÃn Ignacio de Loyola décadas después soñaba con darle vuelta al mundo. Loyola inició su Viaje alrededor del Mundo el 13 de junio de 1581, en dirección a México.
Llegó, finalmente, a Filipinas en 1582, junto a otros treinta y un misioneros franciscanos. De Filipinas pasó a China para evangelizar, pero sufrió varios ataques que casi le cuestan la vida.
Por entonces, MartÃn fue ayudado por Arias González de Miranda, capitán mayor de Macao. El 31 de diciembre de 1583, MartÃn llegó a Malaca, de donde volvió hacia la penÃnsula Ibérica por la llamada Ruta Portuguesa.
Llegó a Europa en 1584 y se puso en contacto con el Consejo de Indias para tratar los problemas que tenÃan las misiones franciscanas en el Extremo Oriente.
Se entrevistó con el padre general de los franciscanos y consiguió del papa Gregorio XIII la bula de custodio de China. En 1585 partió con veinte misioneros del puerto de Lisboa hacia Oriente por la Ruta Portuguesa. A su llegada a Malaca pretendió adentrarse en China. Tras dos intentos fallidos decidió denunciar ante el rey Felipe II las dificultades de las misiones en China.
Para ello, partió del puerto de Macao hacia Nueva España el 12 de julio de 1588 en la fragata Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza, al mando de Pedro de Unamuno. El 22 de noviembre de ese mismo año llegó al puerto de Acapulco, desde allà continuó su viaje y llegó a España al año siguiente.
MartÃn Ignacio de Loyola reseña en Viaje alrededor del Mundo la cultura de Japón. Fue de los pioneros en establecer tratos allÃ. Asà en 1594 partió otra vez para América del Sur, siendo nombrado obispo de Paraguay, el 19 de noviembre de 1601.
Pronto convocó el sÃnodo de Asunción o Rioplatense, el primer sÃnodo que se realizaba en Paraguay, para la buena enseñanza de la doctrina cristiana a los naturales. Este sÃnodo supuso notables mejoras de la situación de los indÃgenas y determinó que la evangelización fuese en lengua guaranÃ.
