LluÃs Vives (1492-1540) fue uno de los más destacados humanistas y filósofos del Renacimiento. Se le considera un conciliador entre la cultura antigua y la medieval, precursor de no pocos aspectos del pensamiento moderno.
Sus escritos, todos en latÃn, son aproximadamente unos sesenta. La variedad de su obra, y su espÃritu innovador, revela la profunda calidad humana de LluÃs Vives. Nuestro autor insiste en problemas de método, demostrando que, ante todo, es un pedagogo y un psicólogo.
La obra más transcendental de Vives en el campo filosófico es este Tratado del alma (1538), que aquà presentamos. Está dividido en tres libros en los cuales el estudio de los sentidos, de las actividades intelectuales y racionales, de los sentimien-tos y de las pasiones, se enlaza con el de la fisiologÃa y el examen de los problemas filo-sóficos y éticos correspondientes.
En el primer libro, Vives aborda temas como los sentimientos en general, el conocimiento interior, la vida racional y el conocimiento del alma.
En el segundo libro de este tratado dedica capÃtulos a elucubrar sobre la inteligencia simple y compuesta. Le siguen reflexiones sobre la memoria y el recuerdo, la razón, el juicio, el ingenio, el lenguaje, la manera de aprender, los conocimientos, la reflexión, la voluntad, el alma en general, el sueño y los ensueños, el hábito, la muerte, la inmortalidad, etc.
Y en el tercer libro reflexiona sobre el tema de las pasiones.
En su tratado, Vives, aun siguiendo a Aristóteles y defendiendo la inmortalidad del alma, atribuye a la psicologÃa el estudio empÃrico de los procesos espirituales. Estudia la teorÃa de los afectos, de la memoria y de la asociación de las ideas. Esta nueva manera abordar estos asuntos filosóficos lo convirtió en un precursor de la antropologÃa del siglo XVII y de la moderna psicologÃa.
