We are obliged to live with joy
The Torah commands us to be joyful: You shall rejoice in all the good that God has given you. That is, we are obligated to feel joy in what is given to us by God.[1]
But why do we need a command to be happy, since we should automatically be happy when we have good things?
Let's see. It is the nature of man to want more than what he currently has, just as our Sages say: He who has a hundred, wants two hundred.[2]
Our moments of happiness are mixed with sadness for what we lack.
The Torah therefore commands us to rejoice in what we have. Thus, we must strive to feel complete joy.
