Imagina que enciendes el móvil. Tienes una aplicación especial con un menú de interfaces para otro componente especial incluido en el hardware, un electrón confinado en un pozo cuántico. El juego consiste en modificar los estados de la partÃcula con el mÃnimo de ayuda de interfaz. Hay muchos niveles. En el lÃmite, tendrÃas que poder soltar tu móvil y sintonizar/interactuar con el electrón a voluntad. Sintonizar o controlar? Esa es la cuestión.
***Si la tecnologÃa es antes el problema que la solución, usarla como solución de todos los problemas sólo amplifica al infinito el problema original. En el siglo XX se escribió sin cuento sobre la ciencia y se hicieron toda suerte de reflexiones profundas sobre la técnica, pero, de manera casi increÃble, la relación que existe entre ambas se resiste a cualquier tratamiento razonable, mÃnimamente consistente. Y asÃ, todo lo que digamos sobre la ciencia o sobre la técnica, por más que pretenda circunscribir su dominio, tiene que ser igualmente deficiente y falto de alcance. El saber-poder es un sujeto decididamente impuro que recuerda a un perro rabioso girando en cÃrculo para morderse el rabo, y al que nadie se atreve a ponerle la mano entre la cola y los dientes.
Que este engendro moderno de la tecnociencia reduzca a tal impotencia nuestra capacidad de análisis ya lo dice todo. Apenas se advierte que es la ciencia, en tanto que arte sacerdotal, la que crea el marco de discursos sobre usos y aparatos, limitándose la tecnologÃa al papel auxiliar de rellenarlos en nombre del beneficio del consumidor. Si en el horizonte de fusión hombre/máquina en que vivimos todo esto parece ya nimio es porque ha desaparecido cualquier sentido de la responsabilidad, y si ha desaparecido el sentido de la responsabilidad es porque se siente que no se puede hacer otra cosa.
La imagen del perro es por supuesto un chiste. Si en lugar de ello afirmara que la tecnociencia es una criatura que aún se revuelve en su huevo tal vez nos recorriera un estremecimiento. Se dirÃa que uno tiene en la mano ese huevo y sopesa qué hacer con él. Hay en la palabra y en la cosa un potencial latente que no ha visto todavÃa la luz. Acercarlo al umbral de la conciencia es contrario a la deriva actual.
La utilidad de estas cosas para el hombre es lo de menos; no hay que preocuparse de dar de comer al que ya se ahoga en el vómito por sus excesos. Al contrario, se tratarÃa de liberar eso que ahora está entretenido apretando un botón. Cuando dejamos de oprimir algo, ese algo tiene oportunidad de ascender. PodrÃa ser la naturaleza, podrÃa ser nuestra propia naturaleza.
Sin embargo aquà voy a hablar de leyes y de máquinas, cosas que atesoran un alto grado de abstracción. Para qué? Qué sentido tiene, cuando sólo absteniéndonos de su contacto tendrÃamos oportunidad de ver a dónde va todo? No encuentro una respuesta para esto. En el fondo, creo que se trata del más puro e injustificado optimismo por el futuro de la ciencia y de la técnica. O tal vez no tan injustificado, si éstas son un fiel reflejo del orden mundial, siempre perecedero y volátil. Entonces, a lo mejor sólo intento concebir que, igual que otro mundo es posible, también son posibles otra ciencia, otras técnicas y otros vÃnculos con la naturaleza.
