Two young lovers, Sasha and Volodia, are separated by war and keep their love alive through passionate letters. They write about their childhood, their families, daily life, joys and sorrows. At first it seems like a normal exchange of letters, until the reader realizes that time itself is out of joint: the lovers are not only separated by a continent, but by five decades. She lives in Russia in the 1960s; he is fighting in China during the Boxer Rebellion at the beginning of the twentieth century. Although Volodia dies in one of the first skirmishes, his letters keep arriving. Meanwhile, she marries, loses a child, and continues writing to him, as if time stood still. A moving love story that, through the power of words, transcends the laws of time and space.
