La Regenta es la primera novela de Leopoldo Alas ClarÃn. Fue publicada en dos tomos en 1884 y 1885 y, en palabras de su autor, fue escrita como artÃculos sueltos que según iba escribiendo iba mandando al editor.
Es una de las mejores novelas españolas del siglo XIX, por la complejidad psicológica de sus protagonistas, y sus conflictos sociales y personales. Su tema central es el adulterio de Ana Ozores. Este conflicto se desarrolla en oposición a las costumbres, la historia y los valores de Vetusta, una ciudad imaginaria.
La Regenta es la infinita aspiración amorosa del alma en diaria lucha con un mundo corrompido que mezcla, trastoca y envilece el apetito de la carne y la ansiedad de Dios.
