Según nuestra datación, Montesquieu manuscribe sus Reflexiones sobre la monarquÃa universal en Europa entre fines de 1718 y 1724. Luego encarga una tirada de prueba, de muy pocos ejemplares. Montesquieu revisa y acota uno de ellos, que es el único que ha llegado hasta nuestros dÃas, pues decide, por temor, destruir los demás. La obra ha permanecido recóndita para el gran público durante cerca de tres siglos. En un texto conciso y deleitable articulado en veinticinco reflexiones, inédito hasta ahora en nuestra lengua, Montesquieu compara su presente y tiempos pretéritos para desentrañar, tras la caÃda del imperio romano, los sucesivos intentos de instauración de una monarquÃa universal europea a la luz de regÃmenes civilizatorios tales como el godo, el carolingio, el normando, el tártaro, el turco, el inglés, el español o el francés en distintas épocas históricas.
