Los Poemas de Evaristo Carriego están marcados por su realismo opuesto a las corrientes simbolistas de la poesÃa argentina de ese momento.
Carriego fue un poeta que no vaciló en pintar con crudo realismo la pobreza, el dolor y la violencia del paisaje urbano. La obra de Carriego convirtió en sujetos poéticos a personas, lugares y hasta formas de contacto social de sectores marginales.
Su único libro de versos editado en vida, Misas herejes, apareció en 1908. Adquirió cierta fama con los poemas, pero no pudo disfrutarla ya que murió el 13 de octubre de 1912 a la edad de veintinueve años.
Jorge Luis Borges, que fue su gran admirador, escribió en 1930 un interesante ensayo sobre su vida y obra titulado Evaristo Carriego. No es solamente la biografÃa de un poeta olvidado; en realidad, el gran escritor argentino utiliza su existencia para recrear el suburbio porteño de principios del siglo pasado, un rescate del arrabal y el tango:
Carriego fue el hombre que descubrió las posibilidades literarias de los decaÃdos y miserables suburbios de la ciudad: el Palermo de mi infancia. Su carrera siguió la misma evolución del tango: arrollador, audaz y valeroso al principio, luego convertido en sentimental. En 1912, cuando tenÃa veintinueve años, murió de tuberculosis, dejando un solo libro publicado (Las misas herejes). Recuerdo que el ejemplar, dedicado a mi padre, fue uno de los diversos libros argentinos que habÃamos llevado a Ginebra y que yo allà leà y releÃ.
