The novel begins with a real event: the visit of the sailors of the ship Victoria to the island of Timor in 1522 during the first circumnavigation of the globe. From this historical episode, the narrative weaves together poetry, magic, and madness, crossing the recent history of East Timor from the 1974 civil war to independence in 2002. The narrator--the left sandal of Carolina--tells and reinvents the stories of those who took part in the building of the nation. An original, deeply human, and profoundly free narrative.
