Quien desee comprender lo esencial del conjunto de las leyendas caballerescas y de los escritos épicos a los que -juntamente con otros muchos afines y que en cierta medida le están vinculados - pertenece el ciclo del Grial, debe superar una serie de prejuicios, el primero de los cuales es el que llamaremos literario.
Se trata de la actitud de quien, en la saga y la leyenda, se niega a ver otra cosa que una producción fantástica y poética, individual o colectiva, pero, en todo caso, sencillamente humana, ignorando por tanto lo que en ella puede tener valor simbólico superior y que no puede acompañar a una creación arbitraria. En cambio, ese elemento simbólico, que a su modo es objetivo y supraindividual, precisamente constituye el elemento esencial en las sagas. En las leyendas, en los mitos, en los cantos de gesta y en las epopeyas del mundo tradicional. Lo que cabe y debe admitirse es que, en el conjunto de las composiciones, ese elemento simbólico no siempre procede de una intención perfectamente consciente. Sobre todo cuando se trata de creaciones de carácter semi-colectivo, no era raro el caso de que los elementos más importantes y significativos se expresasen casi sin saberlo sus autores, quienes apenas se daban cuenta de que obedecÃan a ciertas influencias que en un momento determinado se valÃan de las intenciones directas y de la espontaneidad creadora de personalidades o grupos particulares como medio para conseguir sus fines.
