Like many before her, MarÃa Lagana arrived in Hollywood from her native Italy in the late 1920s, fleeing her past and leaving almost her entire family behind. Fifteen years later, on the eve of the United States' entry into the Second World War, MarÃa is a producer at Mercury Pictures and struggles to prevent both her personal and professional life from falling apart. Her mother no longer speaks to her, her boss has been summoned to Washington, her lover--a Chinese American actor--is trapped in rigid studio typecasting, and the studio itself, her only home in exile, teeters on the brink of bankruptcy.
