La novela MarÃa de Jorge Isaacs es considerada como la obra cumbre de la literatura colombiana romántica. Por su temática y estructura no podemos negar la influencia de la corriente romántica francesa, pero el idilio entre MarÃa y EfraÃn se inserta en un marco totalmente nuevo: la naturaleza del Valle del Cauca.
La trama central de la novela es el infortunado romance entre dos jóvenes: EfraÃn, hijo de un rico hacendado de la región del Cauca, y su prima MarÃa.
Los cuatro temas fundamentales del romanticismo: el amor, la naturaleza y la muerte vertebran el armazón de esta novela.
En MarÃa se encuentran muchos elementos autobiográficos: la casa donde se desarrolla el idilio fue la misma en la que vivió el autor: la hacienda El paraÃso. También Isaacs como EfraÃn, nacieron y vivieron en el Valle del Cauca, fueron hijos de padre judÃo, convertido al cristianismo, estudiaron en la capital y fueron grandes lectores de poesÃa.
Aunque la historia por excelencia es un romance trágico, también aparecen otros subtemas que acreditan la singularidad de esta obra: la autoridad patriarcal, la esclavitud, el costumbrismo y la naturaleza.
