La primera parte acompaña a MartÃn Lutero desde su desaparición después de la Dieta de Worms y su refugio en el castillo de Wartburg hasta su regreso a Wittenberg, la Guerra de los Campesinos, su matrimonio con Catalina de Bora, sus enfrentamientos con Erasmo, Karlstadt y Zuinglio, la consolidación polÃtica del luteranismo y los últimos años de su vida.
La segunda parte retrocede hasta sus años de formación y examina sus angustias religiosas, su comprensión del pecado y el proceso que condujo a su doctrina de la justificación por la fe sola. A continuación, contrasta esa doctrina con las enseñanzas de Jesús, san Pablo, la Carta de Santiago, los primeros escritores cristianos y la tradición católica sobre la gracia, la libertad, las obras y la perseverancia.
