En 1594, un sacerdote de veintisiete años llamado Francisco de Sales fue enviado al Chablais, una región ganada por completo para el calvinismo. Le cerraron las puertas, le negaron los púlpitos y atentaron contra su vida. Entonces empezó a escribir. Redactaba de noche hojas sueltas de controversia y las deslizaba por debajo de las puertas de quienes no querÃan escucharle. Cuatro años después, la comarca entera habÃa vuelto a la fe católica.
Las Controversias son aquellas hojas. No un tratado de gabinete, sino un arma pastoral escrita en campaña, con la Escritura y los Padres en la mano y sin una sola lÃnea de acritud. El futuro doctor de la Iglesia expone aquÃ, con la claridad y la dulzura que harÃan célebre su nombre, la respuesta católica a las objeciones de la Reforma:
- La misión: por qué autoridad predica un ministro
- Las marcas de la verdadera Iglesia: una, santa, católica y apostólica
- Las ocho reglas de la fe, y cómo las violaron los reformadores: la Escritura, la Tradición apostólica, la autoridad de la Iglesia, los concilios, los Padres, el Papa, los milagros y la razón natural
- Los sacramentos y el purgatorio
El manuscrito autógrafo se conservó y sirvió como prueba en el proceso de canonización del Santo. La Bula del Doctorado alude expresamente a una de sus páginas.
Sobre esta edición. Reproduce Ãntegra la versión castellana publicada en Madrid en 1898 sobre la edición crÃtica de Annecy, cotejada página por página contra el facsÃmil del impreso original. Se han modernizado únicamente la ortografÃa y la puntuación: el léxico, la sintaxis y el orden de las palabras se conservan intactos. Incluye las más de mil quinientas notas de los editores de 1898, el prefacio del autor, la epÃstola a los señores de Thonon y, como apéndices, el prefacio editorial de 1898, la relación de autores citados por el Santo y los testimonios de autenticidad del autógrafo.
