A partir del año 1880 empiezan a divulgarse las ideas teóricas que el naturalista francés, Émile Zola, expone y desarrolla en el que se podrÃa considerar el documento más importante del movimiento naturalista, Le Roman Expérimental, en el que se traza el perfil del nuevo novelista experimental. Este movimiento estético se caracteriza por su enfoque en la observación objetiva y detallada de la realidad, y por su interés en los aspectos más sórdidos y negativos de la sociedad.
En España son pocos los años que transcurren entre la tardÃa aceptación del realismo y el debate sobre el naturalismo (1883-1887), que empieza cuando circulan las primeras obras de Émile Zola.
En La literatura francesa moderna. El Naturalismo Emilia Pardo Bazán manifiesta que los puntos débiles del nuevo movimiento son, por una parte, el fatalismo o determinismo y, por la otra, el utilitarismo en el arte. Según la escritora gallega, los autores franceses, al hacer hincapié en los condicionamientos de tipo social, fisiológico y biológico (que constituÃan precisamente los fundamentos de la teorÃa del maestro Zola), no saben captar esa auténtica clave de la esencia humana que es el libre albedrÃo.
Para Emilia Pardo Bazán, la novela naturalista, sin alejarse de la realidad y sin caer en exclusivismos, debe dar más bien una imagen exacta de la vida y de los seres humanos, pero en su doble dimensión material y espiritual. Por esta razón, propone como solución ideal un nuevo realismo que actúe como puente levadizo entre las dos doctrinas filosóficas antagónicas, el tradicional realismo idealista español y el nuevo naturalismo materialista francés.
