Intrigas venecianas tiene dos personajes clave, Alberto, un joven alemán que llega a Venecia y que tras dilapidar su dinero en el juego y la mala vida se ve envuelto en una trama llena de intrigas; y fray Gregorio, un monje cuyo pasado todos desconocen:
De su historia, lo que se sabÃa en el convento era únicamente que, hallándose algunos años antes en Nápoles como soldado en uno de los tercios españoles, se habÃa retirado del mundo tomando el hábito de los conventuales de San Francisco. Inquieto, al parecer, y deseoso de huir de sà propio, habÃa procurado que lo enviasen a Jesuralén, donde estuvo algún tiempo. Llamado otra vez por sus superiores a Europa, hacÃa como tres o cuatro años que se hallaba en Venecia, donde su retiro y la agitación interna que parecÃa ser su origen habÃan crecido visiblemente.
Ambos personajes son atrapados en una conjura y ambos ignoran el nexo que los une. Solo al final del relato el autor nos revela quiénes son y cómo la vida a trastocado sus destinos hasta el punto de ser vÃctimas eternas de un mismo enemigo.
