A student full of dreams, as she describes herself, disillusioned with the Bolshevik dictatorship, she quickly becomes convinced that the underworld is the only truly revolutionary class. She decides to live on the streets and become a thief, both out of political conviction and for the thrill of risk she openly admits enjoying. Far from the heroic image of the construction of socialism, she reveals a Moscow and Leningrad populated by outcasts--street children, drunks, and the prostitutes that she reveals to us in a dry, sharp, and uncompromising language. This volume contains, in addition to Yevgenia's autobiography, several declassified NKVD documents relating to her internment, trial, and execution, and a study on her rediscovery by the Russian historian and activist Irina Fliege.
