El presente volumen examina una serie de preguntas fundamentales acerca del desarrollo formativo del orden de la creación. Comenzando con la cuestión de cómo caracterizar adecuadamente la historia, Ouweneel pasa a preguntarse por el significado de la historia; si podemos discernir patrones o épocas distintivas en ella; cómo debemos entender la providencia de Dios en la historia; y, finalmente, cómo se relaciona el Reino de Dios con el desarrollo empÃrico de lo que comúnmente se denomina historia universal.
La historia nunca es simplemente un registro de meros hechos, al margen de la cuestión de si tales cosas existen en primer lugar. Como he explicado en mi SabidurÃa para Pensadores, los hechos siempre son hechos-para-las-personas; siempre están delineados contextualmente. Hasta donde podemos determinar, el historiador griego TucÃdides (c. 460 - c. 395 a.C.) fue el primero, aparte de su contemporáneo algo mayor Heródoto (c. 484 - 425 a.C.), que intentó limitarse a los hechos.
