The house on Santo Domingo Street in Santiago, Chile, has sheltered several generations of the Lonsonier family. Having arrived from France, from the Jura Mountains, with a grapevine in one pocket and a few francs in the other, the patriarch put down roots in the South American country at the end of the 19th century. His son Lazare, upon his return from the hell of the trenches of World War I, would live there with his wife Thérèse and build the most beautiful of Andean aviaries in their garden. It was there that his daughter Margot, a pioneer of aviation, would nurture her dreams of flying, and where she would unite with a mysterious soldier from the past to give birth to Ilario Da, the revolutionary. Many years later, the bloody drama of Pinochet's dictatorship would strike the Lonsonier family. Swept into the eye of the storm, they would fly together back towards their destiny with the mysterious legend of a vanished uncle as their only legacy. Bonnefoy thus paints a portrait of a lineage of uprooted individuals--his own family--whose terrible dilemmas, intertwined with the wounds of history, reveal their profound humanity.
