El poema introductorio Los heraldos negros que da nombre al poemario, es la antesala que nos anuncia el dolor que refleja este libro. El recuerdo reciente de la pérdida de su hermano y la incomprensión humana hacia el sufrimiento del prójimo, ponen a Vallejo ante la angustia existencial.
César Vallejo intenta representar su experiencia vital en su forma más completa. Expresa la naturaleza interna de las emociones, sin preocuparse de la realidad externa. Adapta el lenguaje para expresar sentimientos. Vallejo se interesa por la desolación, la búsqueda desesperada del momento amoroso y los golpes de la vida, que anuncian la desolación y la muerte.
Una profunda tristeza empaña muchas de sus composiciones ya desde el inicio de Los heraldos negros. En éste y en otros poemas es patente el progresivo alejamiento del Modernismo. No hay espacio para su yo poético desgarrador y lleno de incertidumbre en la belleza y perfección formal de la imaginerÃa modernista. Versos como el siguiente están en otra órbita estética:
Hay golpes en la vida, tan fuertes... Yo no sé!
