Las guerras púnicas (264 a. C. - 146 d. C.) fueron una serie de guerras entre los ejércitos de las ciudades antiguas de Cartago y Roma. Años antes del estallido de las batallas, Cartago pasó de ser una pequeña comunidad portuaria a una de las ciudades más ricas y poderosas de la región mediterránea. Cartago tenÃa una armada poderosa, un ejército mercenario y recursos abundantes para actuar como una autoridad en el comercio y la polÃtica. Por ello, Cartago prohibió el comercio romano en el Mediterráneo Occidental a través de un acuerdo con Roma, la cual era solo una pequeña ciudad en esa época. Al no tener un ejército organizado, Roma no tenÃa otra opción más que cumplir con el tratado.
Sin embargo, como demuestra la historia, Roma no permaneció pequeña e insignificante por mucho tiempo. A medida que su tamaño y poder crecÃan, también aumentó el deseo de Roma por luchar contra sus opresores cartaginenses; y asà surgieron las tres guerras púnicas. Al principio del conflicto, Cartago dominaba el Mediterráneo. Ya hacia el final de las guerras, Roma no solo habÃa conquistado Cartago, sino que además se habÃa convertido en la sociedad más fuerte en el Mediterráneo Occidental. Fue periodo de formación para la República romana, el cual eventualmente la llevarÃa a formar su propio imperio.
