La Gran Bretaña victoriana era el paÃs más desarrollado tecnológica y económicamente del mundo en aquella época. Como tal, tenÃa el poder de proteger sus intereses. Con el descubrimiento de nuevas rutas comerciales en Oriente, y con la fundación de la CompañÃa de las Indias Orientales, Gran Bretaña se volvió adicta a los artÃculos lujosos y exóticos de China. La seda, la porcelana y el té tenÃan una gran demanda entre los ricos. Gran Bretaña era tan fuerte económicamente en aquella época que incluso las clases media y baja podÃan permitirse disfrutar de artÃculos de alta calidad importados de China, especialmente el té.
Gran Bretaña importaba todo lo que su sociedad deseaba, pero era costoso. El principal problema era que China solo aceptaba pagos en plata, lo que creaba un enorme desequilibrio en el comercio. Para no perder dinero con los productos importados, Gran Bretaña tenÃa que vender algo a China. Sin embargo, a este imperio oriental le gustaba presumir de ser autosuficiente. Los chinos no necesitaban importar nada, ya que su industria estaba lo suficientemente desarrollada como para suministrar a todo el paÃs lo que necesitaba. Gran Bretaña tenÃa que conseguir algo que los chinos necesitaran, y en su desesperación, se decidió que Gran Bretaña vendiera opio.
Cuando los esfuerzos diplomáticos para introducir el opio en el mercado chino fracasaron, el Parlamento británico aprobó una alternativa: la guerra. Hubo dos guerras, una de 1839 a 1842 y otra de 1856 a 1860. Se conocen colectivamente como las guerras del Opio. Los británicos, a los que se unieron los franceses, fueron apoyados por los estadounidenses y los rusos, y se enfrentaron a la China imperial, gobernada por la dinastÃa Qing. Estos conflictos se han olvidado en gran medida en el mundo occidental, quizás por un sentimiento de vergüenza colectiva.
